Basic Income Conversation

Basic Income for Artists: An Online Conversation

Monday 20 July 2026, 6 to 8pm
Online via Zoom

In association with Basic Income Network Scotland

We are bringing together Black and Global Majority creatives and cultural professionals for an online conversation about what a basic income could mean for artists in Scotland. Held in association with Basic Income Network Scotland, this session is part of Creative Balance, our work exploring wellbeing and support for racialised people across the creative sector.

So much of creative life is shaped by financial uncertainty, and that pressure falls unevenly. A basic income for artists has been talked about as one way to change that, giving people the security to make work, take risks and sustain a practice without the constant worry of how to get by. This conversation is a chance to think through what that could look like here, and what it would mean for us.

Together we will explore the challenges artists in Scotland face, look at how a basic income for artists has worked elsewhere, including the pilot in Ireland, and think about the steps we might take to make the case for one in Scotland. You will be among fellow creatives and others working across the sector, in small and supportive group conversations where your voice helps shape the discussion.

This is a welcoming, accessible space. When you register, you can let us know about any access needs and we will do our best to put the right things in place. The session is held over Zoom with a waiting room, and is not publicly listed, so that it stays a safe and protected space for everyone taking part.
